National Conference on Contemporary Trends in Management Research

‘National Conference On Contemporary Trends In Management Research’ was held on August30, 2019 at MPBIM.  Sri. Pascal A Nazareth, Former Ambassador of India, Chairman Bhavan's Gandhi Centre for Science and Human Values and a veteran Gandhian, who has authored many books on Gandhi inaugurated the conference and urged researchers to carry out research on Gandhi as a manager and leader. Kum. Preethi Prasad, alumna and MPBIM and a well known young Bharatanatyam Dancer and Guru performed inaugural dance invoking blessings of Lord Vighneswara.

Dr. S Japhet, Vice Chancellor, Bengaluru Central University, in his address noted that for educators,  it is important to be ahead of time to be relevant. In the 21st century knowledge has enormous influence on economy of all nations connecting every one across globe. He observed that there is direct link between Education-Research-Innovation. He noted that Management research has moved on from taking up in-depth studies to now using quantitative tools based on complex econometrics techniques, multi level analysis and more recently hybrid methodology whereby a single study combines quantitative and qualitative techniques which is related to problems being analysed

Dr. S. Bisaliah, former Vice Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru and Senior Professor, MPBIM,  felt that today teachers are busy in teaching and consulting work and not much of creative or imaginative work can been seen in the research turned out. Language of management research is the language of mathematics, language of statistics, language of econometrics which need to be focused. He felt that unless one studies these subjects quality research can not come out.

Keynote addresses at the Conference

Dr. N R Parasuraman, Director, Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Institute of Management Development, Mysuru, in his keynote address called for involvement of students actively in research. Underlining the importance of technology, he said that fast changing technology is a major trend in research. Cross functional research, ethics and a broad based approach are few major trends.

Dr. William E Nganje, Professor and Chair, Department of Agri Business and Applied Economics, NDSU, USA, in his second Keynote address noted that traditional management research has a strong emphasis on people and strategy. Managers continue to encounter major challenges that encompass strategies on managing self (e.g., work-life balance), board (goal congruent between management and BOD), and organization; in a holistic framework. Managers are beginning to use a “systems thinking” framework to address traditional research limitations. Three important and emerging trends in applied management research cover methods to address them - systems thinking, experimental research strategies, and digital technology

Presidential Address and opening remarks

Er. N. Ramanuja, founder Chairman, MPBIM, who was former Chairman & Managing Director, HMT Ltd., in his presidential address traced the path of research in machine tool industry.  Recalling the development of machine tool industry, he said HMT did not believe in reinventing the wheel but with a strong R&D force adopted prevalent technology from overseas  admirably for the domestic market and in the process came up with many pioneering efforts to cater to  Indian manufacturers in various sectors. He recalled the role of HMT’s Research and Development in the introduction of CNC technology in India and pioneering marketing effort to induce CNC manufacturing among Indian manufacturers which revolutionised manufacturing sector.

Dr. S. Sathyanarayana, Principal MPBIM and Conference Chair, in his opening remark traced the trends in management research over the years outlining the changing technologies and emergence of new trends. Management research has evolved with new paradigms in technology, neurosciences, big data, etc. that have affected research in all spheres of its ambit. To mention a few: Digital marketing, Social media advertising have had a sweeping effect on influencing the buying patterns; Web analytics were born out of the need to track the behaviour of site visitors and, as the popularity of e-commerce and web advertising grew, businesses demanded details on the information created by new practices in web data collection; Coolhunting; Artificial intelligence (AI); Big data and data mining are playing crucial role in the management, bringing in improvement of the entire management process influencing the process of decision making, ushering automation in many areas.

Dr. N S Viswanath, Director General, MPBIM, welcomed the gathering.
